Interactive Session on Burn Injuries

The 1317th regular meeting, held yesterday, was graced by the esteemed presence of Professor and Plastic Surgeon Dr. Shankar Man Rai and Dr. Kiran Nakarmi, Director of Kirtipur Burn Hospital, as guest speakers.

While addressing the program, Dr. Shankar Man Rai highlighted that burn-related issues in Nepal are extremely serious. He noted that due to the limited number of hospitals providing burn treatment, there is an overwhelming patient load, making hospital operations increasingly challenging. He also shared that Kirtipur Burn Hospital has been delivering services of a higher standard than those available in India. As most burn victims come from economically disadvantaged families, treatment has largely depended on national and international support. He further mentioned that since last year, the Government of Nepal has also begun providing assistance, which has brought some relief.

Similarly, Dr. Kiran Nakarmi provided detailed information on preventive measures to avoid burn accidents. He emphasized not cooking on floor-level stoves, maintaining a minimum distance of three meters while warming near fire, avoiding nylon clothing while cooking or warming by fire, and using quality stoves and burners.

He also stressed that in the event of a burn injury, substances such as toothpaste, ice, salt, or other household remedies should not be applied to the burned area. Instead, the affected area should be washed with clean running water for at least 30 minutes, and the patient should be taken to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. If one’s own body catches fire, he advised dropping to the ground and rolling to extinguish the flames. If another person is on fire, covering them with a blanket or thick cloth was recommended. He also cautioned against running when on fire, as airflow can intensify the flames.

Participants described the program as highly relevant, informative, and interactive. At the conclusion of the event, Past President Surendra Dhakal announced a commitment to provide NPR 100,000 in financial support to Kirtipur Burn Hospital. Finally, President Prem Oli expressed heartfelt thanks to all guest speakers and participants and formally concluded the meeting.
